Throw back Training tips from the pro's

Chase Kosterlitz- -

Chase is probably THE top paddler on the East Coast!! The Florida Native is on the podium wherever he goes and represents the EC out on the west very well. We got a chance to meet him at last years Carolina Cup, he is a really nice guy and he is CRAZY FAST. If you watch the video footage we took from last years Carolina cup you will see he stands out because he SHOOTS out to the front of the pack very fast. Chase will be updating his site with workout tips so make sure to keep an eye out www.watermonkey.com . Here is what he has to say

"Hi Ben,

It's funny that you wrote me about this because I am in the final stages of a new website I am putting together. A lot of it will be dedicated to training from A-Z. I will be sure to send you the info once it is live.

For now I can give a little advice. There are a ton of variables for what each individual should do if given the set of circumstances you laid out. Each individual will be different. However, the number one most important thing they can do in the beginning is to get their technique dialed in. I find a lot of people try to go into the endurance/physical part of training before they have half-way decent technique. If you practice one hour a day of poor technique you are only reinforcing bad habits.

If they do have the technique down then they can concentrate on interval training with their limited time. This kind of training targets all 3 energy systems and will give the most band-for-your-buck.

I hope you can use this. Once the site is up there will be some very specific training content to help people like your customers.

Happy Holidays"

Thanks Chase and good luck this upcoming season

TBT Dave Kalama winter advice

Hey guys, I have had a lot of you asking about off-season training lately. A lot of people say they do not have a lot of time to train in the off-season due to kids/wife/husband/work/cold weather etc. So I figured what better way to get idea's on training then from the best paddlers in the world?? I know some of them just from going to different events and some of them I just contacted and they were cool enough to help us out with some tips. One of the coolest things about this sport is that even the best paddlers in the world are down to earth. I plan to post tips every few days from different pros that responded. The question I asked them was "if you had less then an hour a day to get a workout (Off Water) what would you do?"

Dave Kalama -

Dave Kalama is a LEGEND in the surf and sup world. Notorious Big Wave rider and watermen, he wrote the book on sup. All his workouts are focused on being able to stay out on the water longer and have more fun. All very basic core workouts, Dave says

"Jump rope, push ups, and crunches, at the most basic level, ad more if you have the time. Even just a little yoga also helps me a lot. aloha, Dave
.."

Thanks Dave, pretty cool that one of the biggest names in sup and one of the most legendary watermen on the planet still takes the time to lend some advice. Check out some great articles on Dave's site

TRAINING TIPS FROM THE PRO'S- Jenny Kalmbach
Hey guys, I have had a lot of you asking about off-season training lately. The question I asked them was "if you had less then an hour a day to get a workout (Off Water) what would you do?" Here are their responses

Jenny Kalmbach

Jenny is one of the top female paddlers in the world. She is the first ever winner of the battle of the paddle, she was voted 2011 sup paddler of the year, and she was the star of Destination 3deg to name a few of her MANY accomplishments. To read more about her and follow what she is up to check out her site http://jennykalmbach.com/
So stoked she is giving some tips to our followers. Race season is right around the corner so get busy!! Here is what She has to say

"Hi,

Here's my 2 cents on offseason training!!

Over the years, one of my biggest lessons has been the importance of rest & recovery. So, after a long year of racing and many hours on and off the water, it's important to give myself a break from paddling both physically and mentally! I stash my race boards, pull out my SUP surfing boards and hit the gym. To mix it up, I strength train 3-4 times a week and add in biking, running and of course surfing whenever the waves are good. To avoid over-training and give my body time to heal, I take at least 2 days off a week.

Everything I do in the off season is designed to increase my performance during race season, so it's key to stay motivated and focused. In the gym, it's all about increasing power by using heavy weights, lower repetitions and slow movements. A lot of my workouts involve core and lower body work, doing exercises like the plank, squats, box jumps & lunges. I incorporate the TRX, rope training, indo board, & jump rope. When I'm running or biking, I focus on hill repeats & speed/interval work. I'll spend 20-30 minutes on the treadmill doing short, fast intervals, which is a great way of increasing speed. I also really enjoy being on the bike, which is great for improving cardio and building leg strength and endurance; it's crucial for my legs to stay strong during a 5+hr paddle!

After a couple months off from paddling, I'm looking forward to training and racing again! With so many great new races popping up, it's looking to be an awesome 2012!

Happy paddling!!
Jenny"

Thanks Jenny

Karen Wrenn

Karen is one of the best paddlers in the world, she is from Oregon and is always on top of the leader boards in every race she competes in. We were lucky enough to see her at the Carolina Cup last year and she was VERY FAST and finished 1st in the women's Elite class. She was also the first person to paddle the Catalina Islands solo 39.8 miles from Avalon, Catalina to Dana Point, California. You can learn more about Karen on her website below. Here are some great tips from Karen

"How do I train in the off-season? This is the biggest question I get from people this time of year. I live in Portland, Oregon and it is cold during the Winter and I am also a mom of three kids. I am extremely busy with my kids activities. It is hard and can be dangerous to paddle in very cold weather. I know how hard it is to stay motivated and find the time to keep up with training in the winter. But, finding even 45 minutes of time will make a huge difference. When Spring rolls back around you will be ready to start paddling again.

I do a lot of cross training in the gym in the Winter. Circuit training is great because you can get your heart rate going, build muscle and muscle endurance. I will first do something that elevates my heart rate followed by a couple exercises that include strength and balance. For example, I might do 20 double jumps (or you could do 100-150 single jumps) with a jump rope and then move right into 20 kettle ball swings (from a squat posistion swinging the kettle ball to shoulder height coming to a standing position) and repeat. Then I would move into a plank position with elbows on a ball and roll the ball forward and back for 20 reps. I would do this circuit 3 times and then move on to another circuit.

Another idea of a circuit is to do 15 split jumps on each leg (http://www.livestrong.com/video/5310-split-jumps/) and then 20 tri-cep dips then 20 reverse crunches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVVlXA0dqGg) and repeat this circuit another two times.

Basically, come up with some circuits of three exercises. Have the first exercise of the series be something that will elevate your heart rate ( jump rope, running stairs, sprints on a rowing machine) add a strength exercise ( kettle bells, push ups, tricep dips, pull ups, etc...) then add in a core exercise ( reverse crunch, plank, medicine ball sit up and throws). After you finish one circuit of three then move on to another.

I run a lot during the Winter. Running is a great way to keep up your cardio endurance and a great thing to do if you only have 45 minutes to spare. If you are not a runner... biking and swimming are great options too.

I hope this gives you some ideas. Feel free to check out my website, http://www.karenwrenn.com/ it will be going through some construction soon and will be updated with information like this. You can email from my website and I will do my best to help you with your questions. Happy Holidays!"
