11 ways to stay safe when you stand up paddle SUP
By Distressed Mullet
The best way to have fun while stand up paddling SUP is to stay safe. There are some simple things you can do to stay safe… I know there are a ton more but here are my top 11:

1. Always check the forecast. If you know what to expect from the conditions, you can plan a safe, fun route. I have a theory that carbon fiber paddles are great lightning rods. Don’t test my theory.

2. Look at a map of the area and find out where you can access land and water and get help.

3. Know your water conditions. If you are in an area affected by tides, know which direction it’s moving.

4. Plan your route based on wind and current. It’s always a good idea to paddle into the wind and current first. If you get tired, it can blow or flow you home. If you go with the wind first, getting back can be a nightmare.

5. Tell someone when and where you are paddling. If you don’t show up later, they can let the authorities where you were supposed to be

6. Buddy System: Paddle with a friend. If you get in trouble, there’s help, even if that means they are the ones who are going for help.

7. Be honest about your skill level and your limitations. If you aren’t an experienced surfer, don’t attempt to go out in hurricane swell. If you are new to SUP, try flat water before heading into the ocean, the waves, a river, current, etc.

8. Bring water, food. When you lose hydration, you lose balance. It’s always a good idea to bring something. It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

9. Wear sunscreen. Skin cancer sucks.

10. Wear a leash when you surf or downwind, or whenever you go out in conditions. Your board is your flotation device. If you lose it in high winds or surf, not only are you stuck in the water, but it could hit someone. Leashes in the surf is a mandatory piece of equipment. A 12 footboard and a 12 foot leash means a 24 foot kill zone.

11. Bring a pfd and a noise-making device—a whistle is good. I think PFDs are useless baggage on a board, but it’s the law and it’s an expensive ticket. This will keep you safe from being ticketed. A whistle is a good idea for getting someone’s attention, a boat or someone on shore if you need help"

One point he didn't bring up probably because its a lot warmer down there but it is that time of the year where you should start wearing some sort of wetsuit protection. I know everybody says im not gonna fall blah blah blah, YOU NEVER KNOW when you may need it. Leash and wetsuit are crucial in winter conditions.
