TRAINING TIPS FROM THE PRO'S- DOUG ELLIS

Hey guys, I have had a lot of you asking about off-season training lately. A lot of people say they do not have a lot of time to train in the off-season due to kids/wife/husband/work/cold weather etc. So I figured what better way to get idea's on training then from the best paddlers in the world?? I know some of them just from going to different events and some of them I just contacted and they were cool enough to help us out with some tips. One of the coolest things about this sport is that even the best paddlers in the world are down to earth. I plan to post tips every few days from different pros that responded. The question I asked them was "if you had less then an hour a day to get a workout (Off Water) what would you do?" Here are their responses

DOUG ELLIS-

Doug Ellis is one of the top pro's on the east coast and is becoming a real force in the paddle world. A lot of you know him from the clinic he did here as well as from local races. Keep an eye on Doug this next season as he is only going to get better, here are some great tips from Doug .

"While nothing replaces time on the water with a paddle in your hands, busy schedules often take over and training time can be limited. Its always better to get some form of training done, whether its a 30 min gym session, or a quick run on your lunch break. Coming from triathlon, Im partial to the swim-bike-run workouts. When Im really pressed for time, I try and get some interval work in to achieve a really quality workout in a short period. Id prefer to be in the pool, but sometime the ease of throwing on your running shoes and heading out the door is more realistic. So, go for a run! The prep time is quick, the workout can be as intense as you want, and you don't have to pack much gear in your "workout bag." Here's a short and simple yet intense interval workout I like to use when Im pressed for time...

10-20 min warmup
4x400m sprint accelerations with short jog recovery in between
10-20 min cooldown.

Thanks Dougie Fresh and look forward to another DF clinic this spring

Pro tips still to come from Danny Ching, Slater Trout, Larry Cain, Dave Boehne, Chase Kosterlitz, and Dave Kalama
